Pregnancy is a special time for families, especially the expecting mother. There are many changes that happen throughout the 40 weeks. As the baby grows inside the womb so does mom. The most common cause of low back pain during pregnancy is a condition known as “sacroiliac joint dysfunction” or “sacroiliac subluxation”. Much of the weight is translated forward causing the upper body to sway backwards increasing the curve of the low back and also increases joint and nerve pressure. However, the low back and pelvis are not the only joints and nerves that are affected. The expectant mother often experiences pain in her mid back and neck to due to several changes that are happening during this physiological process. Changes such as, sleeping positions, the way she bends and lifts and changes in exercise routines just to name a few.
It is important to have proper pelvic joint function during pregnancy in order to have a natural vaginal birth. The pelvis and birth canal need to relax and expand during delivery; joint dysfunction may impede this natural process. Chiropractic can help with an easier delivery and limit the amount of back labor pain.
